8 Things To Know About Remote Online Notarization
Technology Based Notarizations
Remote online notarization (also known as RON) is a fresh and unique way to conduct notarizations in the 21st century. It allows a signer, or multiple signers, and a notary to meet in a virtual setting on a secure approved RON platform to have documents notarized. An audio and visual recording of the transaction is made and a tamper-proof digital code is embedded in the notarized document.
After the signer has been properly identified by traditional means and a knowledge-based authentication (KBA) process takes place, the document can be electronically signed by all parties. The the notary will attach his or her stamp, an electronic seal (eSeal), to the document and the process is completed.
RON is the perfect solution for:
1. Individuals finding it difficult to meet during business hours.
2. People living in rural areas.
3. Multiple signers located in different locations or states.
4. When you need it done NOW!
In most cases, all that is needed is a computer, cellphone, tablet and internet connection.
The process of online notarizations is safe, secure and easy to use.
Definitions
Notary - an individual appointed by the State to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents.

Did you know?
Some RON platforms allow for the signer to invite third parties.
Imagine being able to invite a trusted friend, family member, your attorney or real estate agent to attend the signing virtually!
Knowledge Based Authentication (KBA) is just one of the multiple tools used to identify signers and deter fraud.
If you have signed up online with a financial corporation and been presented with a series of questions about addresses you have lived at, car loans, credit card accounts or mortgages you may have had; you have most likely used the knowledge based technology several times not even knowing.
Is RON legal?
YES!!!!
Most states have already adopted laws accepting notarizations performed out-of-state. In 2000, Congress passed the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-SIGN), authorizing the use of electronic signatures and notarizations.
Although not every state permits its notaries to perform notarizations online, RON notarizations are legal in all 50 states, US territories, and even some foreign countries.
