Life Happens, Then What?
To quote Dawn Pruchniak, sometimes the best gift is your last gift. When the author of this #1 best seller lost her husband unexpectedly, she was forced to wade through the volumes of "stuff" in their lives: assets, liabilities, insurance, vehicles, stocks, bonds, powers of attorney, wills, beneficiaries, custody of children, final wishes...
No one wants to think or talk about these things. However, the best time to talk about this is before anything happens.
Some of us have taken steps in saving for education, retirement, and the proverbial rainy. We may have even had the necessary legal documents drawn by an attorney outlining our last wishes, power of attorney and living trust. However, very few take the next step and gather information together which will enable our loved ones to carry on without us.
Kosak Consulting will conduct several interviews with client to obtain information needed to assemble a binder. The binder contents include information regarding the client's various accounts and where documentation will be located. The location of the binder and documentation inventory should be shared between spouses and/or a trusted friend or family member.
Why don't people take this step in the process of providing for loved ones? Because it feels insurmountable. As you will see from the outline below, this is an incredibly detailed and time-consuming project.
Our goal is to assist the client in preparing a detailed listing of their personal affairs by breaking the project down into manageable pieces and gathering the documentation needed so it is accessible to the client and the people they designate to handle their affairs.
NOTE 1: If a client is unmarried, it is recommended that they discuss with a loved one the possibility of being present during the interviewing process so the client feels comfortable sharing the information needed to compile this binder.
NOTE 2: The service provided by Kosak Consulting does not replace the need for individuals to retain legal services who provide the drafting of wills, powers of attorney, and trusts. Ideally, individuals utilizing this service have already had discussions concerning their personal affairs and are in the process or have had their legal documents drafted.
NOTE 3: Prior to the initial interview and each meeting the client will be provided with a list of information and/or documentation to have available during the meeting. Detailed notes will be taken, and which will be used to compile the contents of the client's binder.
